Oo, Oo, Oo, I Made A Monkey Out of You
I come from a relatively large family; I have five (5) brothers and two (2) sisters; and when we were kids, we all had a tendency to attempt to make each other look ridiculous in our other siblings’ eyes, or in the eyes of our parents. If one of us were able to fool the other, you would often hear the one sibling who had fooled the other say “Oo, Oo, Oo, I made a monkey out of you!”
This thought immediately came to my mind, just now, when I read this.
The first chimpanzee baby born at the LA Zoo in 13 years was mauled to death Tuesday by an adult chimp in front of a crowd of visitors, including children, zoo officials said…
“I did talk to a couple of visitors as I was coming up here, tried to help them process what they had seen,” said John Lewis, director. “We also had some other visitors to help us get a better understanding.”...
...Tuesday’s violence against the infant, who was gradually introduced to the coed group, was unexpected for the staffers that make up the zoo’s Great Ape Team.
“We have made grief counseling available to them,” said Denis Verret, deputy director. “They are a support group. They work with these animals every day.” (bold by ed.)
Adult common chimpanzees, particularly males, can be very aggressive. They are highly territorial and are known to kill other chimps. Chimpanzees also engage in targeted hunting of lower-order primates such as the red colobus and bush babies, and use the meat from these kills as a “social tool” within their community. (bold by ed.)
Perhaps the zoo’s Great Ape Team should study up on actual chimpanzee behavior, then they would not require grief counseling, and possibly they wouldn’t be made monkeys of.
