Is That a Promise, or a Threat?

When I was a child, and angry at my parents, I occasionally would lash out with some outlandish nonsense such as “I"ll never speak to you again!”  You know, something childish, to which my parents would more often than not respond “Is that a promise, or a threat?”  Of course, my outburst ended up being a baseless threat, and far from a promise.

I thought of this, after reading the following from a New York Times piece titled Administration Seeks Increase in Oversight of Executive Pay, wherein we learn of this.

The Obama administration will call for increased oversight of executive pay at all banks, Wall Street firms and possibly other companies as part of a sweeping plan to overhaul financial regulation, government officials said.

This proposed action is being taken in anger, think AIG, is a real threat to capitalism and free markets, and unfortunately could become one of the few promises kept by Obama, unlike the promises that Obama spread around like candy during the campaign.

There will be many American individuals championing this nonsense for State oversight of compensation for executives of private enterprises.  I wonder how they are going to feel about it when the reach of the State makes it down to the worker level?

This threat, whose catalyst is anger, should not be allowed to become a promise kept.
