What's This Doing in the NYT?

The New York Times, typically, is banging the drums as if the sky is falling over one issue or another.  In most instances, the drumbeats are simply a cacophony of blather meant to encourage the masses to mass closer together, for the children, or the community, or some such grouping where safety is supposedly only in numbers.

Thus, I was a bit surprised this morning to find an article which encouraged “rationality” in regards to germs, as evidenced by the following paragraph from the article.

"A plea, then, for a little calm, a little rationality. Try to look upon bacteria as did their discoverer, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, “For me, this was among all the marvels that I discovered in nature the most marvelous of all, and I must say, that for my part, no more pleasant sight has met my eye than this of so many thousand living creatures in one small drop of water."

The piece is titled “Germs, Germs Everywhere. Are You Worried? Get Over It."
