Update On the USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711)
Fortunate to be alive, and solid damage control actions…
Here’s a link to just released photos of the damaged USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711). Take a look at this one and this one. The men on that boat are indeed fortunate men.
The blue tarp is in place to cover the actual sonar listening array. I’ve been in that, while at sea. Damn. I still know the interior of that class of submarine like the back of my hand. It’s a fine boat, damaged though it is.

Posted by gary on 01/27 at 06:39 PMSeeing these pictures enforces to me that subs are not indestructible, but built very well. I served on new construction of the USS Los Angeles as a plank owner who saw it launch, assembly, testing and all sea trials, including it nearly sunk 3rd sea trial.
I am thankful that the boat made it back with all but one of the crew. This incident’s outcome could have been worse, God Bless them all!
