The Perseids Are Coming

I enjoy viewing a good meteor shower, and predictions for this year’s Perseids, which will peak between August 12th and 13th, hold promise.

It’s going to be a great show,” said Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. “The Moon is new on August 12, which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors."

Head out to the boonies and catch the show.

August Meteor Shower Will Be ‘A Great Show’

  1. Usually, when they come along we try to find a lakeshore campsite… Say, Lake Erie State Park, or perhaps Lakeside or Hamlin. Kinda like a drive in movie, only the screen is straight up, and the show starts a lot later.

    We’ll likely go on the 11th, which would be a Saturday. The moon shouldn’t be much of an issue that night.

    You watch; it’ll rain.

  2. Lookin’ forward to it, up north...where it’s dark-dark.

  3. John;

    I think you’re unaware of this, so I’ll pass it on to you here…
    I used the e-mail notification system on your site to notify me if anybody responded to my original comment.  I followed that link that the e-mail provided to the individual post.  For some reason, the individual posts do not have either links to the comments for that post, nor the comments themselves, as some other sites do.  I assume this is an oversight in the code.

  4. Bit, thanks for the heads up.  I’ll see if I can tech it out.

  5. We watch it every year while camping at Hat Creek, which is way out in the boonies between Lassen and Shasta. It’s so dark there, there’s not even much EM radiation smile, which would be why UC has a radio observatory nearby.

    Always somethin’ to see.
