Studies in Self Reliance - A Congratulatory Note

I’ve always attempted to instill a strong sense of self reliance in my children.  In my twin sons the lessons have taken firm hold.

Both of my boys completed their Bachelor Degrees in Finance, taking their last final exam at the end of December.  Each performed exemplary during their four (4) years of college, ending with GPAs of 3.99 and 3.98, without any cajoling what-so-ever from their old man.

More importantly, from a self reliance standpoint, is the fact that each of my sons earned their college education via their academic performance in highschool, which earned them full, freeride scholarships to the university they attended.  Even more impressive, from a self reliance standpoint, is that during their four (4) years of higher education neither of my sons asked me for a single penny, as each boy maintained their own employment and earned their own income.  More impressive than this, in my opinion, is the fact that each boy saved money, investing in stocks and IRAs, walking away from college with money in the bank and zero debt.

Each of my sons has also already obtained employment in the financial industry, and one of the boys is already fully licensed in Series 7, 66 and life and variable products insurance.

I do not know if I could be more proud.  Congratulations to my sons, models of self reliance.

  1. Wow.  I contented myself with reading this aloud to my husband over coffee this morning, the kids having already made themselves scarce.  We wondered approximately what percentage of recent college grads and their parents could boast anything comparable.  Our best WAG:  Vanishingly small.

    Major props all around.
