Stand Up for David Mayo’s Legal Defense

I’ve posted in regards to the travails of David Mayo, a sports journalist for the Grand Rapids Press on a number of occasions, here, here, and here.

My recent post noted that Kent County Circuit Judge Dennis Leiber denied Mayo’s request for dismissal of all charges, stating in his denial that there was sufficient probable cause for the search warrant issued to raid Mayo’s home.  Said probable cause initially being alleged invoices showing that David Mayo had purchased hydroponic growing equipment, which the police obtained from a shadowy organization known as “Operation Greenthumb” (see my earlier posts for what little information is known about this evidently government operation).

When Mayo’s motion to have all charges dismissed was denied by Leiber, he had two choices.  Cop a plea to reduced charges, or go to trial.

Mayo has elected to go to trial.  Making such a decision, when the police and the judge involved in the case are colluding against you to prop up a flimsy affifavit, upon which the search warrant issued was based, is no easy decision for an accused individual, and I fully respect and support Mayo’s decision.

In the most recent Grand Rapids Press story regarding Mayo, titled Suspended Press sports columnist David Mayo rejects plea deal on marijuana charges; his job with The Press is in jeopardy, one notes that not only is Mayo in jeopardy of going to prison, he will in all likelihood lose his job with the Grand Rapids Press.  And it is not just David Mayo whose life is being ripped apart based on invoices for purchasing hydroponic growing equipment, his wife, Denise, is also facing charges.

Mr. Mayo graciously sent me an email, noting my posts on his story, requesting that I post a short note in regards to the legal defense fund being set-up to battle the injustice he and his wife are currently facing, as it takes deep pockets and tenacity to battle the state.  I post a portion of this email willingly and with best wishes.

Greetings Mr. Venlet:

I have kept track of your track-keeping with my ongoing court case.  I want to thank you for your perspective on what has been a difficult time for myself and my wife Denise.

Because of our mounting legal bills, lost income and desire to defend ourselves against ill-enforced law, we opted this week to decline a plea offer which probably would have given us a probation-only sentence.  To that end, we have established a defense fund.  Would you mind terribly noting it in your blog?

Contributions will be 100-percent handled by one of my dearest and most trusted friends, Jeff Calhoun.  All contributions will be absolutely anonymous and used entirely to fund our defense.  Contributions big and small will be appreciated.

Checks and money orders may be made payable to Jeff Calhoun and mailed to:

Jeff Calhoun
ATTN: Defense Fund

Thanks again for your ongoing support.

Best Regards
—David Mayo
