“Skip The Census” - “A Civil Disobedience Idea” - Redux

Last April, I noted the idea floating around encouraging individuals to skip the census as an active form of civil disobedience.  I thought it was an excellent idea then, still do now, and I heartily endorse it.

I mention this again, today, because the 2010 census is in the news, and will be for next few months, as the government gears up to count Americans.

Refusing to complete census forms, as a form of civil disobedience, as so eloquently stated by Thoreau, is one of the few methods of peaceful civil disobedience Americans can still participate in without drastic, forceful retaliation from the United States government.

Is there a penalty for not completing the census form?  Yes, a $100.00 fine can be assessed, but as a form of civil disobedience you could also refuse to pay the fine for non-compliance.  I suppose if the federal government wanted to apply all the forces at their disposal, they could then prosecute Americans who refuse to complete the census form or pay the $100.00 fine, threaten them with jail time, and though I can imagine the United States government considering this drastic response to non-compliance, if enough Americans were civil disobedient a more collosal waste of Americans’ tax dollars could not be imagined, nor would enough jail cells be available.

I urge Americans to skip the 2010 Census, refuse to be counted, excercise civil disobedience.
