"Sick Irony" or Par for the Course

Mike Tennant, at Strike the Root, notes that an individual who disputes paying taxes is more apt to be punished, unjustly in my opinion, than an individual with a rap sheet a mile long who has now allegedly killed a little girl.  Tennant rhetorically asks the following question and supplies his own answer.

"Why was this guy on the loose, while the guy who just wanted to keep what he’d earned was locked up?

The State knows where its priorities lie."

  1. I posted a comment at STR, too, the gist of which is that Smith’s rap sheet is mostly harassment from the state.  He has one conviction for a legitimate crime (aggravated battery) and a heap of drug offenses.  There are a couple of instances of prescription fraud which are questionable, too.

It’s hard to see where anyone could have predicted that Smith would kidnap and kill a little girl.

Of course, tax evasion guy should not be in prison, but that’s beside my point.  That point being, that Smith’s rap sheet is only a mile long because the state has too many freaking laws.

  2. Good point billy-jay.  One “legitmate crime” does not a recidivist make.
