North Carolina Attempts A Forced Shakedown of Amazon.com and Loses
As states suck more and more air due to difficult financial times, meaning the states’ forced shakedowns via taxation dry up, they go looking for new or alternative sources to feed the beast which is government.
North Carolina decided to go after Amazon.com, attempting to force Amazon.com to be their proxy tax assessor and collector, but Amazon.com said no. I say good for Amazon.com, though it hurts the little guys who earned a few bucks via Amazon.com adverts.
Amazon.com cut ties with business affiliates in North Carolina after the state drafted legislation that would force the company to collect sales tax…“We will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26,” the company told North Carolina affiliates in its notice. “We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.” (bold by ed.)
