No Jacket Required

Evidently, the Washington Post thinks those individuals who wish to pay their respects to Ronald Reagan, by passing by his coffin, lying in state, should be required to meet some kind of formal dress standard.  Is it really only about appearances?  How trite.

  1. Mr. Venlet – You don’t have a problem with the Washington Post suggesting that people wear proper attire as a sign of respect, do you?

How do you propose to communicate information (like respect) without symbols?

Isn’t walking by the coffin a “symbolic gesture” in and of itself?

  2. I have no problem with the Washington Post “suggesting” more formal attire, but the attire, the appearance, is not what determines the respect individuals are showing.  The viewing, or passing by of the coffin, as you stated, is the show of respect.

  3. I would say that one doesn’t even need to walk by the coffin to “show respect” … technically speaking – right?

But walking by the coffin is definitely a sign of respect.

As is dressing formally when you walk by the coffin, that would be a greater sign of respect.

    Communication via symbolism.

It’s all kind of “Trite” when you think about, eh “Brother”? wink
