  1. I’m not opposed to “nukular” power.  It has many advantages.  I am opposed to nuke power plant owners who haven’t worked out a plan for the by-products.  Currently they are hoping the fed guvmint will build a dump inside Yucca Mountain.  Like that will solve the problem of what to do with the waste.

The French and the Japanese refine the spent ore and use it in other things.  Our guvmint doesn’t allow us to do that.

“Nukular” power makes a tasty meal, but you gotta decide what you are going to do with the leftovers before you start baking your casserole.  And passing that responsibility to the government is just plain stupid.

  2. sed - The “guvmint,” as you state, shouldn’t be in the nuke power business.  Business should be private.

  3. The long-term hazardous nuclear wast the disposal of which is a problem is the exotic isotopes used for nuclear medicine.

As for powerplant waste, my understanding was that Jimmy Carter, in response to concerns that it could produce weapons-grade material, banned the processing of it in the typically bass-ackwards believe that other countries would follow his example and make the world a safer place.

Oh I completely agree.  But somewhere in the history of nuclear power, the owners rolled over and let the guvmint regulate the hell out of them.  We are stuck with a situation where the Feds control licensing, building, generation, and byproducts.  The spineless owners play into it.  Oh please, Uncle Sam.  Where may I put my garbage?
