Is Civil Disobedience Dead?

Glenn Reynolds links to an article regarding a proposed tea party rally that has been cancelled by the Cape Coral City Council (Florida) due to fears that too many people will show up.  In actuality, the tea party was cancelled because the organizer, Lynn Rosko, was ordered by the Cape Coral City Council to obtain a permit from the council, and insurance for the event, which Ms. Rosko declined to do.

What I recommend to Ms. Rosko, and the individuals living in the Cape Coral, Florida area, is to hold the tea party anyway.  Advertise it via flyers, on the internet, word of mouth, practice civil disobedience, and show the state that they cannot impinge on the right of peaceful gatherings to protest the overreach the state by issuing commands for permits and insurance.

Cape “tea party” canceled; City fears too many attendees

UPDATE:  Cape Coral tea party is back on, under new management.  No word on if permits and insurance have been obtained.

  1. Awhile back I had to reserve a meeting room at City Hall for our annual HOA meeting.  The nice lady took our check and dutifully scheduled us on the computer, then she told me that “Of course, your use of the room is contingent on the city council not needing it that night.  They have the first use of that meeting room, and can cancel us right up until our meeting is to start.”

So I told her that if they cancel us, we’ll all just go out the the very nice plaza out front and conduct our meeting there.  She got a shocked look on her face and said “Oh no, you can’t do that, you need a permit.”  I gave her my best smile and told her that “If 50 of my neighbors show up on that plaza at the same time, we might just stand around for an hour or so and talk about neighborhood things… this IS America, after all, and that’s just what we do.”

Pompous little bureaucrats, think they own us!  They’re almost worse than the ones that keep getting elected.

My advise to the residents of Cape Coral is “Screw ‘em.  Just do it.  It’s a TEA PARTY for crying out loud.  Sam Adams never bought a permit OR insurance.”

    Amen to that, Bill.
