I Guess Mothers Should Only be Submissive

"As is so often the case when I try to comment on today’s American society, I can only fall back on profound understatement: Such a young woman is not the sort of mother whom Mother’s Day was founded to honor."

The above statement was posted by Nicholas Strakon at The Last Ditch in response to a Ben Stein comment made while being interviewed on a NPR show.  Stein’s comment was in regards to having a care for mothers who are serving in Iraq.

Strakon’s statement is bullshit masquerading as anti-statist/war sentiment.  Either that or an exhibition of fear of women who aren’t necessarily afraid to mix it up.

  1. Isn’t there a purely naturalistic argument to be made against women serving in the military in large numbers?

Suppose you have two populations that go to war, and one has an all male military force, and the other has a mixed force of males and females.

Assuming that both sides suffer the same relative number of causalities then isn’t it true that the side with the all male army will have a larger population of females at the end of the conflict?

And isn’t it true that the society with more females can replenish its population much quicker?

Look suppose you have two isolated tribes and both tribes start off with 24 individuals. The first tribe is 16 males, 8 females. The second tribe is 16 females, 8 males.

If you come back 100 years later which tribe would you expect to have the larger population?

  2. If women want to serve, and are capable of performing the tasks individuals are called to perform in violent confrontations, let them serve, arguments be damned.

  3. How ironic that you want mothers to be honored at war on a holiday that started as a call for pacifism. That’s right up there with the Humane Society’s change from animals saving humans to humans saving animals.

And just so it’s clear, my wife will be at home with the kids where she belongs. Mark me sexist, but kids need a mother’s touch and daycare will influence your impressionable kids (they all are) in ways you may not be prepared for.

  4. John Venlet: If women want to serve, and are capable of performing the tasks individuals are called to perform in violent confrontations, let them serve, arguments be damned.

Well, you may have noticed that my argument didn’t even touch on the relative combat abilities of the fairer sex, as I believe that issue is irrelevant in the context of reproduction and survival of the overall society and culture in question.

But are you trying to assert that females are just as capable of performing the tasks individuals are called upon to perform in violent confrontation?

Look, I realize that if you aren’t home you expect your wife to defend your children from intruders in your dwelling, but my question is what if you are home? Am I suppose to honestly believe that YOU (John Venlet) are going to send your wife downstairs with a gun in the middle of the night because you heard a noise?

  5. I wasn’t trying to assert anything in regards to women’s abilities in violent confrontations.  My assertion was as stated, if women want to serve, let them serve.

As to who goes downstairs with a gun, both of us are capable.

  6. Matt -

I’m pleased that your wife will be at home with the kids, because there is much to said for a mother’s love and care in raising a child rather than daycare providers.  Not every individual is of the same mind as you in this regard, though.  What if your wife desires to work outside the home?

  7. Well, I don’t think I’ll be marrying someone who puts her career ahead of her kids. Pretty simple. smile
