I Fail to Understand How Mandating Service Builds Voluntaryism

"As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service."

And another thing.  I always thought volunteering to serve, well outside of the military anyway, was providing assitance free of charge.  How come it will cost money from your and my pockets to fund volunteers?  Oh, yeah, it’s because it is not voluntary, it’s mandated.

  1. Imagine for a moment that “teenager” referred to some minority group that couldn’t vote. Then Kerry’s plan might look an awful lot like an attempt to draw in votes from some block of eligible voters by promising the service and/or labor of a group that had no say in the matter. Obviously children’s rights are a tricky issue, but I have to wonder what Kerry’s plan might entail if the voting age were somewhere around 13 instead of 18.
