GVSU Student Derek Copp Shot for $60 Bucks Worth of Marijuana
The shooting of the unarmed Derek Copp has received some national attention. Most notably via Radley Balko at his blog The Agitator. I posted in regards to the story when the deputy, Ryan Huizenga, who shot Copp was charged.
The blog No Third Solution notes that deputy Ryan Huizenga is back on the job, in an administrative position where he cannot use his gun, and today’s Grand Rapids Press notes that a support rally was held for Huizenga.
So what is happening with Derek Copp? Well, he is going to charged with selling $60 bucks worth, about 3.3 grams, of marijuana.
The affidavit shows an undercover officer assigned to the West Michigan Enforcement Team bought 3.3 grams of marijuana for $60 from Copp on March 11, the day of the shooting.
So, this miniscule amount of marijuana, zealously tracked down and purchased by West Michigan’s finest drug war warriors, not only got Copp shot, it could possibly put him in jail for four (4) years as the sale of this miniscule amount of marijuana is considered a felony. Does this make any sense at all?
Police say undercover officer bought pot from Derek Copp before raiding his apartment
It’s interesting to note that the dead tree copy of the Grand Rapids Press reports that Derek Copp will be charged with the headline Student shot in drug raid charged (pdf file), but neither this headline, nor the accompanying story, are available in the online edition of the GR Press, currently.
Information regarding possible jail time of four (4) years for Derek Copp was obtained from the dead tree copy of the GR Press, which you can view at the above pdf file link.
3.3g??? That’s not quite 1/8 of one ounce, for all of us on the imperial system of weights and measures…
And that’s a felony?
The only crime here, is that he was charging $60 for an eighth.
