David Mayo and Derek Copp Both Cop Pleas
I’ve followed the criminal injustice cases regarding David Mayo and Derek Copp, casualties of the State’s “war on drugs.”
David Mayo, who I most recently posted on here, had rejected a plea deal, and set up a legal defense fund, has instead copped to growing marijuana.
Press sports columnist David Mayo pleaded guilty Friday to growing marijuana, with sentencing set for Tuesday…
Derek Copp, who I most recently posted on here, has copped to a felony count of deliverying marijuana.
Derek Copp, the Grand Valley State University student shot by police during a March 11 drug raid at his off-campus apartment, has pleaded guilty to a felony count of delivery or manufacturing marijuana, court records indicate.
Both of these gentlemen are victims of unthinking zealots enforcing a misguided legal policy. I am certain that the law enforcement personnel involved in these cases will be proudly pounding themselves on their backs for ruining these mens’ lives. And for what? Derek Copp allegedly sold three (3) grams of marijuana. Three measley grams, and for that he could be imprisoned for up to four (4) years. David Mayo, whose home was searched based on invoices which allegedly show he purchased hydroponic growing equipment, faces the same possible prison term. Maybe Mayo could have simply been growing hydroponic tomatoes? Do you grow hydroponic tomatoes, with hydroponic growing equipment you purchased mail order? If you do, your home could be next on the list to searched.
Who has the State protected in either of these cases? No one.
