A Distinctly Important Question

Billy Beck, upon reading this post of Kim du Toit’s, wherein Kim expresses his dissatisfaction with Bush’s latest health initiative, expresses, clearly, the root problem and asks a distinctly important question.  From the end of Billy’s post,

"The essential problem is not that Bush—or anyone else—wants to control your life. The problem is that he can, because of the prevailing conviction that your life doesn’t belong to you. At root, the prevailing conviction is that you belong to “society”.

Well: do you?"

  1. John Venlet: the prevailing conviction is that you belong to “society”.

    Well: do you?

Suppose that your wife and/or your children where about to be killed, but through your own action you could trade places with her/them and be killed in their place.

    Would you do it?

Okay, now replace the term “Wife/Children” with the term “Society”.

If you would sacrifice yourself for your society, then YOU belong to your society.

Of course it is just as true that Society belongs to You. Ideally I guess it is kind of like being married.

You served in the Military—didn’t you Mr. Venlet? Why I’d imagine you’d understand exactly what I am talking about?

  2. Serpent: your contention is exposed as utterly ridiculous with the simple apprehension of the fact of who it is that makes that decision in the first place.

And you’re a complete idiot, everywhere you go to leave your insipid horseshit.

  3. Serpent: “Why I’d imagine you’d understand exactly what I am talking about?”

I understand what you’re talking about, but, what I think you fail to understand, is, that in all instances and actions, in life, it is MY, and mine only, choice as to what I would do.  So called “society’s” choices matter not to me, nor should they to you.

I’m not sure I comprehend what you are trying to say.

Are you implying that since it is The Individual who “chooses” to accept The Society that I am contradicting myself?

I’m afraid your meaning is not very clear. Perhaps you should get some control over your emotions, as they seem to be controling you. Take a deep breath and just say what is on your mind. smile

If “society’s choices” don’t (shouldn’t) matter to You or Me, then why is it that we both speak English and don’t crap in our pants?

Why is it that we both predictably stop at every red light we encounter?

You are having the same difficulty as our friend Mr. Kennedy. There is a problem with a fundamental premise in your worldview, and you don’t want to look – you don’t want to address it. That error (although tiny in and of itself) is cascading through your beliefs and corrupting everything it comes in contact with. Until you resolve it there will always be obvious inconsistencies (contradictions) in your philisophy.

  6. You know exactly what I am saying, but you’re a bigot, and the only public front that you can pose on such an issue is your catatonic skepticism.  You are never going to be convinced, because you refuse to think.

And I don’t give a runny shit whether you like me, or approve, or not.

    Drop dead, instanter.

  7. Billy Beck: You know exactly what I am saying …

So you are asserting I can read minds?

Billy Beck: … you’re a bigot, and the only public front that you can pose on such an issue is your catatonic skepticism.

    I am a bigot?

Fascinating. Who exactly am I prejudice against in your opinion?

Billy Beck: You are never going to be convinced, because you refuse to think.

I’ll put my logic up against yours any day Mr. Beck.

The thing is you seem much more interested in profanity and name calling then you are in logic or reason.

Billy Beck: And I don’t give a runny shit whether you like me, or approve, or not.

    Drop dead, instanter.

Mmmm … Individuals who are unable to control themselves are easily controlled by others. You hardly seem worth the effort Mr. Beck. I require more meat in my diet.

  8. Serepent -

You are welcome here, but, your tenacity, or should I say mendacity, in commenting on only one, as you write, supposed “tiny error” in certain individuals thinking, myself included, can be not only insipid, but tiring for individuals who are clear thinking.

Continuing in the vein, in which you have chosen to flow, will, for myself at least, bring me to consider you as the “Wizard of Oz.” Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

    As you desire Graviton.

I’ll try and catch you on the next cycle. Perhaps you’ll think a little differently by then?

    Merry Christmas my Friend.
