5:48 A.M. and Helpless

The Iz was acting unusual this morning, as I sat over a bowl of oatmeal and a glass of milk.  Restless, pacing around my feet, as they dangled from the stool.  She was whining at me, at 5:48 A.M., so I reached down to pet her, and she fell into a Grand Mal.  Jaws agape, eyes bulging, rigid limbs, I could only babble to her, like you do to a newborn.  Damn, I was helpless to do anything else.  It was her sixth seizure in one year.

    Fate.

You don’t control it, you only observe.

Occasionally the Goddess (TLOP) reminds you of this fact.

  2. Serpent - The foolishness of your comment underwhelms me.

  3. Serpent is an idiot!
King John, our hearts are with you as you prepare for the passing of a member of your family.

  4. John:

The first time I saw a Grand Mal unfold was in my old pal, Lucky.

Each seizure was more terryfying for us than the one before it. Fortunately, ol’ Lucky suffered only one or two before the end.

I know you’ll do the best for Iz that you can. Best to both of you.

  5. John;

I’m finding myself in a couple of similar situations. A bird I’ve had for 20 years… raised it from the egg, in fact, died just last week. One of the harder things I’ve ever done. A week later, I swear, I can still hear him calling, first thing in the morning.

And a dog I’ve had for nearly as long is developing serious health issues which leave me wondering if I will have her around in a year.

Not much help, I know… but been there, done that, and (sigh) will again, I doubt not.

And in fairness, Serpant was right in this, at least, there are always feelings of self-blame for our helplessness at such situations. Such feelings are not logical, they just are; they exist.  He’s correct to remind us that we don’t have control of the hand we’re dealt… we can only play those cards given us to the best of our ability.... as I’m sure you will, John.

    I’m there.

  6. Mr. Venlet if I am truly being “Foolish” then why were you the one standing around “helplessly” (observing) while your minion (your dog) writhed in pain?

Why didn’t you use your “magic powers” and do something?

Are inconsistently enforced rules still rules? I wonder if inconsistently practiced logic is still logical (logos)?

  7. Sorry to hear about that, John. Been there. It’s always a tuff deal when an important member of the family suffers a setback.

  8. Thanks for the comments, everyone, even your’s, Serpent, though why you have a need to twist, misconstrue, and generally make a nuisance of yourself, when you comment, I do not understand.

The Iz is a dang good dog.

  9. My thoughts are with you....my dog is my child (no children, so it’s safe), and I don’t even want to think of her being sick.  =( My best thoughts and comfort to Iz.

  10. My mini doxie has had only one in the last year, for which I am thankful.  The first time she had a seizure, I thought she had got poisoned.  It scared the bejeebers out of me.  I got her to the midnite vet on a Sunday night, but by the time the dog had tossed up in the car and made it to the examination table, she was alert and ready to go home.  On another occasion, I got her to a vet midseizure.  Thorazine brought her right down smack.  Poor baby.

  11. I’m sorry to hear what’s going on, mate.

  12. Mr. Venlet please don’t misunderstand me. I don’t have anything against you or your dog, and it is not as if I am completely unsympathetic to the poor little creatures plight.

I’m just saying that plight is the result of (objective/logical) Destiny, not (subjective/magical/random) “free will”.

But obviously you have more ... important ... things on your mind right now.

Good luck, I’ll say a prayer for your pet.

  13. Wow, Serpant peeks out from under the hood and sees some light!

  14. Why Tommy?!?

Are you praying for me now?

And here I thought you were going to use your magic “free will” powers to en-Light-en under my hood???
