A Pervasive Evil - The End Justifies the Means

Let’s put aside, for this post at least, the trampling of the rights of innocent individuals which occurred in Aurora, CO when the police, while attempting to nab a bank robber, cordoned off 15 or so cars, ordered the individuals from their cars, including children, handcuffing some individuals and not others, and lining them up on the curb, as reported here.

What I want to address is the following statement, uttered by Police Chief Daniel Oates of the Aurora Police Department, which is allegedly an apology for illegally detaining innocent individuals.

Police Chief Daniel Oates on Monday apologized to the innocent bystanders that got caught up in the search for the suspect. Oates also said the ends justify the means since the suspect was caught (bold by ed.).

This the end justifies the means attitude is a pervasive evil, infecting the highest levels of government to the lowest, and it displays a complete disregard for individual liberty and core moral values, and plainly shows that the Aurora Police Department’s “Individual Value Statement,”

Our commitment to community service is driven by the expectation that we maintain the highest core values.

has no meaning.
